Westover Air Reserve Base
The 439th Airlift Wing is an Air Force Reserve Command unit based at Westover Air Reserve Base, Massachusetts. The wing operates eight C-5M Super Galaxy cargo aircraft and reports to 4th Air Force at March Air Reserve Base, California.
Westover is the nation’s largest Air Force Reserve base and is home to 1,660 reservists assigned to the 439th Airlift Wing. Reservists typically train one weekend each month and complete a 15-day annual tour of duty. The 337th Airlift Squadron serves as the wing’s flying unit.
Day-to-day operations at Westover are supported by approximately 371 civilian employees, including 335 air reserve technicians. In fiscal year 2021, the base contributed approximately $301 million to the Western Massachusetts economy.
The 439th Airlift Wing’s mission is to provide worldwide air movement of troops, supplies, equipment and medical patients. Supporting units provide essential communications, engineering, logistics, medical and security services.
During peacetime, the wing recruits, trains and supervises personnel to maintain mission readiness. It also manages aircraft maintenance and assigned Air Force combat-support property, equipment and supplies.
The wing focuses on five priorities: readiness; recruiting and retention; one standard; quality-of-life improvements; and facility improvements.
